Her father, suffering from Black Lung, is anxious to find her a husband, but the best candidates are fearful of her blue-ness, and she is married to a cruel, older man who beats her viciously, and then (conveniently) dies of a heart attack. She and her widowed coal miner father are the last of the Blue People of Kentucky, victims of a rare genetic condition causing blue skin and brownish blood, making them feared, hated and ostracized by their ignorant and superstitious neighbors. ![]() Set in 1939 in the remote and rugged Kentucky hill country, THE BOOK WOMAN OF TROUBLESOME CREEK is the story of Cussy Carter, a young woman employed as a Pack Horse Librarian, distributing books by mule to the poorest denizens of the area. ![]()
