5/24/2023 0 Comments Magic shifts by ilona andrewsA loyal friend, hard-working, with a nice house. His personality was described several times in exactly the same way, with the use of the same adjectives, as if there weren’t enough things about Eduardo that could even be invented. Eduardo is a tricky choice, however, even for the authors, as evidenced by the limited amount of information they’re able to provide about him. Obviously, Kate and Curran decide to start looking for him, and what they find forms a rather scary picture. One of the side characters, the werebufallo (yup!) Eduardo, whom we’ve met in Magic Breaks, goes missing. Magic Shifts is even more picturesque than the previous books and would be a great film material – but the magic has really shifted. All the right elements are there – Ilona Andrews still knows how to write, how to build a story, how to create powerful, gripping scenes. It must have been very demanding, especially taking under consideration their huge fan base, and I’m afraid they ultimately didn’t succeed. I imagine that this new book was a difficult one for the authors: they had to start again, almost from scratch, with an old material, and after seven books it’s really hard to squeeze it even for a few drops of something unique. Seven previous ones formed a complete story arc and I wrote about them here. Magic Shifts is an eight installment in Kate Daniels’ world. Let’s jump to urban fantasy genre for a moment. So how about a lighter, or shadier, type of fantasy than the big books I have talked about lately? □ I will come back to Robin Hobb, I promise, just not today.

Every country has its own way of using language which comes out of the land they live in I think, and the climate. I would also say Indian novelists use language very sensually. That is a tough question, but I would say there’s a love of storytelling, of narrative, and a very particular use of narrative – as a way of discussing complex philosophical ideas. In a country with so many different languages and cultures it may be hard to generalize, but do you think there is anything that stands out about Indian literature and makes it distinctive? Narration seems correct for this type of book, and story zips along at a brisk pace. All in all, this is a good book with a great sense of adventure. His attempts to establish relationships eventually bare fruits, and his adventure continues in a different direction. There underline theme of pre-conceptions people have and how they are quick to judge based on appearance. These attempts and his appearance / race lends him in trouble. Once somewhat comfortable with his new environment, Drizzt tries to establish relationships which really back fires. For seasoned readers, it is a sense that does not easily achieved and I really appreciated it. Since a reader could feel for the character, book provides a great sense of adventure as if reader itself is walking out to the world for the first time. A small thing such as weather change, which we might take for granted, was not well understood by Drizzt. Author did a great job of actually going through a lot of detail about how surface / light / environment impacted Drizzt. At this point, reader knows enough about the character to really understand how one might feel and experience when face with such circumstances. Book starts with Drizzt living in cave trying to make sense of an alien environment. This is the last and best book of the series. I did have to wait several days before I wrote this review just to let everything soak in as I wasn’t quite sure what I thought at first. And I am not even married or an expert on marriage. In All Your Perfects we get to see a more natural, realistic progression in Quinn and Graham’s relationship, from when they met to years into their marriage. Sure, I like to read those because it is a nice escape from reality, but that is not how it works in the real world. There a countless number books where boy meets girl, there is a conflict or two and then they live happily ever after. If Colleen is new to you, I would suggest starting with the Hopeless books or Slammed Series instead of this one, but it is not necessary. Colleen Hoover could write a grocery list and I would be the first in line to read it. |
